Mayco recommends landmark advances in Health Technology Park project

The City of Cape Town has taken a major step forward in unlocking the development potential of underutilised municipal land with the establishment of a new Cape Town Health Technology Park to be located on the Corner of Oude Molen and Diesel Road in Ndabeni.

The Mayoral Committee has recommended the transfer of City-owned land to the Biological and Vaccines Institute of Southern Africa (BioVac). The final report will be submitted to full Council for adoption.
 
BioVac is a leading biopharmaceutical company specialising in vaccine production and advanced medical research, with expertise spanning the full value chain from product development and clinical trials through to large-scale commercial manufacturing for both local and international markets.

The Health Technology Park will serve as a hub for high-tech medical and biotech enterprises, creating a dynamic environment that stimulates innovation, supports new economic sectors, and strengthens South Africa’s position in global health technology industries.
 
‘This is a strategic milestone for Cape Town. The Health Technology Park will not only revitalise a currently unused site, but also attract investment, drive innovation, and create jobs in a critical growth sector for both the City and the country.
 
‘This transaction represents one of the most significant steps yet in positioning Cape Town as a leading centre for health technology and biomanufacturing in South Africa,’ said Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth.

This decision follows a thorough process of valuations, public participation, and consultation with stakeholders and relevant departments.

The land will be developed into a mixed-use precinct made up of offices, laboratories, research centres, and manufacturing facilities for medical and health-related products.

‘The idea is to bring together businesses, researchers and manufacturers in one location, creating a dedicated space for innovation and production in the health sector. The project has been identified as an important step in building Cape Town’s health innovation ecosystem. It will provide space for local and international companies to set up operations, while also offering opportunities for suppliers and service providers in related industries.

‘In short, this is about putting underutilised public land to work in a way that supports new investment, job creation, and the growth of a high-potential industry in Cape Town,’ said Alderman Vos.
